At Lancaster Furnace & Air Conditioning, we want the best for you, your home, and your family! Per industry standards, we highly suggest practicing preventative maintenance and regular upkeep of your A/C system. However, we also know that the unpredictable can happen despite how much we plan to prevent unfortunate events from occurring. Therefore, we believe it is crucial to know some basic troubleshooting steps safe for every homeowner to perform in case your A/C suddenly goes out this summer!
Did You Check the Thermostat?
Do you remember the last time you changed your thermostat batteries? If you can’t recall doing so, it may just be time for a fresh set of batteries! More often than not, A/C trouble is caused by a faulty or low-battery thermostat.
Did You Check the Circuit Breaker?
Next, check the circuit breaker! You may think that your circuit breaker didn’t flip because you didn’t notice it doing so, but it’s entirely possible that it flipped while you stepped away from home for a bit or even during the nighttime. So, your issue just might be resolved by the flick of a switch. Easy peasy!
Did You Check the Air Filter?
A common culprit for A/C issues is clogged air filters. When an air filter goes unchecked and unchanged, it can cause your system to short-cycle or have other problems. So, be sure to check that your air filter isn’t clogged if your system still isn’t turning on. You may be surprised to find that your A/C kicks right back on again after swapping out the older filter for a fresh new one.
Did You Check the Compressor?
Don’t forget about that outdoor unit. If you’ve tried checking everything, and your A/C is still giving you problems, try checking the compressor located outside as a last option. Ensure no harm or physical damage has affected the unit and no loose debris got stuck in the fan blades. The compressor should still be running and making its regular whirring-like noise. However, if it does seem to be running correctly, or it is making an unusual sound you are unfamiliar with (like banging, clanking, or rattling), it’s time to call in the professionals.
What Should You Avoid Doing If Your A/C Goes Out?
We are proud to say that we offer emergency services 24/7, 365 days a year. But keep in mind that we are in the midst of the hottest months of the year, so many other people may be experiencing issues with their A/C as well. But we assure you that we will get to your home as soon as possible! So, while waiting for your technician to arrive, what should you avoid doing while waiting for your A/C to get fixed?
First, avoiding heat-generating devices like your stove, dishwasher, and laundry dryer would help keep the heat at a minimum in your home. Secondly, please don’t leave your freezer door open in the hopes that it will provide some cooling relief. It won’t contribute much to lowering the temperature in your home, and frankly, it’s not worth risking spoiled groceries over!
