While you wait for our technicians, here are some handy tips to help you stay cool:

  • Set your ceiling fans to spin counter-clockwise
  • Close your blinds and drapes
  • Limit opening exterior doors
  • Open windows at night
  • Avoid using heat-inducing appliances
  • Try Making a DIY temporary AC

Here’s how you stay somewhat cool and find some relief in the meantime:

  1. Set Your Ceiling Fans to Spin Counter-clockwise: Most ceiling fans are usually set to spin clockwise, which pushes air down to create a cool breeze when your AC is running. But since your AC isn’t working right now, try setting your ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise. This pulls up the cooler air and spreads it around the room, making things a bit more comfortable without the AC. Not sure where the switch is? You can usually find it on the base of your ceiling fan to change the blade direction.
  1. Close Your Blinds and Drapes: This simple step helps keep sunlight and heat out of your home. Be sure to close all your blinds, drapes, and any window treatments. Don’t forget to shut all windows, too; a daytime cross-breeze won’t do much to keep the warm air out.
  1. Limit Opening Exterior Doors: If you can help it, try to keep the front, back, basement and garage doors closed as much as possible. You don’t want to let the cool air inside escape, and you definitely don’t want any of that warm air sneaking in!
  1. Open Windows at Night: As temperatures dip in the evening, take advantage of the cool air to help chill your home. Feel free to open your windows at night to stay cool, but don’t forget to close them again in the morning!
  1. Avoid Heat-Inducing Appliances: Keep in mind that using appliances like the stove, dryer, and dishwasher can make your home even hotter. So, if you can, try to avoid using them while you’re waiting for your AC to get fixed!
  1. Try Making a DIY Temporary AC: This last tip is a bit “creative,” but when creativity meets innovation, amazing things can happen! You can actually make your own makeshift AC by placing a large bowl of ice in front of an electric fan. The fan will blow air over the ice, cooling down the air from the electric fan as it passes over the ice. With this tip, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool breeze while we work hard to get your AC back up and running!

These tips will help you stay cool while waiting for your AC repair. At Lancaster Furnace & Air Conditioning, we’re all about providing the best and most efficient service possible.
